Genesis
Reproduced from a Copy of the First Golden Cockerel Edition
By Sebastian Carter · 2017
Back to CatalogueThis volume presents the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, the creation narrative in which God makes heaven and earth, light and dark, land and sea, plants, animals, and humankind in six days and rests on the seventh. Sebastian Carter's accompanying essay sets that text beside Paul Nash's 1924 sequence of woodcuts, explaining how the Nonesuch Press edition was designed and how the images treat void, division, and the making of living forms. The work is both scripture and a short study of an illustrated Genesis: the biblical opening of the world, and an account of one modern visual reading of it.
