First published in 1947, this Blandings Castle novel concerns Lady Constance's wish to marry her daughter Veronica to the rich American Tipton Plimsoll, while Galahad Threepwood schemes for the impecunious painter Bill Lister, who loves Veronica and must be smuggled into the household. Impostors, a furious gardener, and the Empress of Blandings, Lord Emsworth's prize sow, complicate a weekend in Shropshire. Identities slip; engagements form and break. The book is a country-house farce in the longer Blandings series, complete as one tangle of courtship, disguise, and pig.
