This volume extracts from General William T. Sherman's 1875 Memoirs the chapters on the 1864 Georgia campaign: the advance from Chattanooga, the fighting around Atlanta, the fall of the city, and the march from Atlanta to Savannah. Sherman describes logistics, the cutting of railroads, the policy of living off the country, and the correspondence with Grant, Lincoln, and Confederate counterparts. Soldiers, civilians, and enslaved people appear as he recorded them. The book is a first-person military narrative of one campaign, not a full life and not a history of the whole Civil War.
