First published in 1941, this novel follows Dona, Lady St Columb, who leaves Restoration London and a reckless court life for Navron, her husband's neglected Cornish house. There she finds a French pirate using the creek as a hide, and she is drawn into his raids and into a life at odds with her marriage. The household includes the servant William, who keeps her secret, and local gentry who hunt the pirate. Settings are the Helford river, the house, and brief returns to town. The book is a historical adventure of escape and desire, not a naval chronicle of the period.
