Frankenstein or Modern Prometheus
Or the Modern Promethius
By Mary Shelley · 2004
Back to CatalogueMary Shelley's 1818 novel, subtitled The Modern Prometheus, follows Victor Frankenstein from a Genevan childhood through university studies at Ingolstadt, where he discovers a means of imparting life and builds a man from corpses. Horrified by the result, he flees; the creature educates himself by watching a cottage family and reading stolen books, then confronts his maker with a claim to sympathy and to a companion. Murders among Frankenstein's friends and family follow the broken bargain. Walton's polar letters enclose the confession. The work is a gothic scientific romance about making life and then refusing to own it.
