First published in 1861, this Barsetshire novel follows Mark Robarts, the young vicar of Framley, who wants a wider world than his parish and signs bills for the charming, indebted Member Nathaniel Sowerby. His sister Lucy, staying at the parsonage, attracts Lord Lufton against the wishes of Lady Lufton, who had planned a different marriage. Bishop Proudie's palace, the Duke of Omnium's set, and the political money of the time press on a country living. The plot is social and financial: how a clergyman's ambition and a mismatch of rank work themselves out in one county.
