This sequence of four long poems - Burnt Norton, East Coker, The Dry Salvages, and Little Gidding - was completed during the Second World War. Each poem takes its title from a place and meditates on time, memory, language, and the possibility of a spiritual pattern inside ordinary hours. Gardens, a Somerset village, the Mississippi and the sea, and an English chapel in wartime become the scenes. The voice shifts among lyric, discursive, and prayer-like registers. The work is a connected philosophical poem in four movements, not a narrative and not a gathering of unrelated lyrics.
