Foucault's Pendulum

By Umberto Eco · 2016

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

In Milan, the young scholar Casaubon joins the editors Jacopo Belbo and Diotallevi at a vanity press that attracts occult cranks. As a private joke they feed those manuscripts into a fabricated Plan in which Templars, Rosicrucians, and later secret societies steer world history, using a pendulum's proof of the earth's rotation as a symbol of hidden order. Readers and fanatics begin to treat the invention as fact. The novel follows how a parody of conspiracy thinking draws in the inventors and the people around them. It is a thriller of ideas set in publishing offices, archives, and European cities.
