In this naval novel, Captain Jack Aubrey loses HMS Java to the American frigate Constitution and is taken, with the surgeon and intelligence agent Stephen Maturin, to Boston during the War of 1812. Prison, parole, and a hostile city constrain them while Maturin resumes secret work and searches for Diana Villiers. The plot turns on captivity, coded information, and the chance of escape by sea. A later action between Shannon and Chesapeake belongs to the same wartime stretch. The book is one campaign in a longer series about friendship, war, and intelligence, complete as an episode of capture and release.
