Folk Tales of the Native American
Retold by Dee Brown
By Dee Brown · 2012
Back to CatalogueThis collection retells thirty-six traditional stories drawn from many North American peoples, among them Seneca, Hopi, Navajo, Creek, Cheyenne, Cherokee, and Blackfoot. Brown groups the pieces by theme: origins and allegories, first meetings with Europeans, the coming of the horse, tricksters and magicians, heroes, animal tales, and ghost stories. The tellings are in plain contemporary prose, not interlinear translations, and a source list records where each story was taken from. The book is an anthology of narrative types rather than an ethnography of a single nation: a survey of how those traditions explain the world and human trouble.
