First issued around 1970, this large collection gathers British folk narratives that Katharine M. Briggs classified from printed and oral sources. One part holds folk narratives - fairy tales, jocular tales, novelle, and nursery stories; another holds folk legends of fairies, ghosts, black dogs, giants, saints, and local wonders. England, Scotland, and Wales supply most of the matter. Headnotes point to types and analogues without turning the book into a theoretical treatise. It is a reader's and researcher's corpus of traditional story, not a single national epic and not a rewritten children's version.
