This collection brings together five of Thomas Hardy's later-nineteenth-century Wessex novels of character and environment: Far from the Madding Crowd, The Return of the Native, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and Jude the Obscure. Across the set, rural work, marriage, and class press on people who try to rise, return home, or hold a farm or a name. Recurring ground includes heath, market town, and the Dorset-like countryside Hardy called Wessex. Each novel is complete in itself. The volume is an omnibus of his major tragic and pastoral fiction, not a continuous saga and not his poems or shorter tales.
