Five Novelettes

Passing Events, Julia, Mina Laury, Captain Henry Hastings, Caroline Vernon, Transcribed from the Original Manu Scripts

By Charlotte Brontë · 1971

Synopsis

This volume collects five unpublished prose tales Charlotte Bronte wrote in the 1830s about the imaginary African kingdom of Angria. Recurring figures include the Duke of Zamorna, his rival Northangerland, and young women such as Mina Laury and Caroline Vernon who are drawn into the politics and erotic bargains of that court. The pieces mix Byronic intrigue, civil conflict, and domestic scenes in an invented aristocracy. They are not the later Yorkshire novels but apprentice narratives from the sibling fantasy world she shared with her brother. The book is a sequence of linked novelettes, not a single finished novel.
