First published in 1942, this detective novel sends Hercule Poirot to reopen a sixteen-year-old case. Amyas Crale, a painter, died of poison while working at his country house; his wife Caroline was convicted and has since died. Their daughter, now grown, asks Poirot to establish whether Caroline was guilty. He takes separate accounts from the five people who were there - the little pigs of the nursery rhyme - including a mistress, a sister, a discarded lover, and household dependents. The book is a reconstruction from memory and old letters rather than a fresh murder in the present.
