This political history of Venice follows the lagoon settlements from their late-Roman and Byzantine origins through the creation of an oligarchic republic headed by a doge. Norwich traces the city's maritime empire in the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean, its role in the Crusades and the sack of Constantinople, and the long contest with Genoa and then the Ottoman Turks. Later chapters cover the mainland terraferma, the shrinking of naval power, and the Republic's end when Napoleon's troops arrived in 1797. The narrative is organised around doges, wars, and diplomacy rather than around daily economic life.
