First published in 1902, this children's novel follows Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother, the Lamb, who are staying in a gravelly country house when they dig up a Psammead, a sand-fairy that will grant one wish a day. Each wish - beauty, wings, riches, a castle, or greatness for the Lamb - lasts until sunset and goes wrong in ordinary English lanes, shops, and fields. The children argue, repair the damage, and try to wish more carefully next time. The book is a comic cycle of desire and consequence, not a single quest, set in a recognisable Edwardian countryside.
