First published in 1948 as Trollkarlens hatt, this children's novel opens as the Moomin family wake from hibernation and find a tall black hat left on their hill. Anything placed in it is transformed, and the household - Moomintroll, Moominmamma, Moominpappa, the Snork Maiden, Snufkin, and visitors such as the Hemulen and Thingumy and Bob - must manage the hat's effects through a summer in Moominvalley. A Hobgoblin later seeks a missing jewel. The plot is a sequence of comic and eerie episodes rather than a single quest: a family story about curiosity, hospitality, and objects that will not stay ordinary.
