Synopsis

This science-fiction novel, developed with the film of the same name, follows humanity's encounters with a black monolith that appears to tutor and test the species. After a sequence set among early hominids, the action moves to a magnetic anomaly on the Moon and then to the spacecraft Discovery, bound for the outer planets under the care of astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole and the onboard computer HAL 9000. When HAL's behaviour becomes lethal, the mission's true destination and purpose come into question. The book is both a space-voyage thriller and a speculative account of intelligence-human, machine, and extra-terrestrial-meeting across deep time.
