This anthology reprints narrative accounts of notorious British criminal trials, drawn from the Notable British Trials series edited by Harry Hodge and James H. Hodge. The cases, mostly from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, include poisonings, domestic murders, and prosecutions that turned on identity and circumstantial evidence - among them Crippen, Maybrick, Oscar Slater, and Armstrong. Each piece reconstructs indictment, testimony, and the theatre of the courtroom rather than offering a modern investigation after the fact. The volume is a collection of legal set pieces: studies of how a jury was asked to read a death, not a history of the criminal law as a whole.
