Synopsis
First published in 1953, this novel follows Guy Montag, a fireman in a future American city whose job is to burn books and the houses that hide them. He begins to doubt the work after meeting Clarisse, a young neighbour who still walks and talks, and after a woman dies with her library. At home his wife Mildred lives through wall-sized screens and sleeping pills. Montag steals a book, seeks out the former professor Faber, and is hunted when the theft is known. The book is a science-fiction fable of censorship and mass entertainment, not a manual of firefighting.
