In a Scanian village an elderly farming couple is attacked in their home; the woman lives long enough to murmur a word that may mean foreign. Inspector Kurt Wallander of the Ystad police leads the inquiry while his own life - a broken marriage, a difficult father, drink - keeps breaking in. The investigation runs through rural isolation, a leak to the press, and a rise in anti-immigrant violence that the crime seems to license. The novel is a police procedural whose central problem is not only who killed the couple but how a closed community and a strained welfare state read a murder.
