Issued in three volumes between 1951 and 1954, this history of the Crusades runs from the preaching of the First Crusade to the fall of Acre in 1291. The first volume follows the expedition from Western Europe to the capture of Jerusalem. The second treats the Latin kingdom and its relations with Byzantium, the Muslim states of Syria and Egypt, and the military orders. The third covers the later expeditions, the rise of the Mamluks, and the extinction of the overseas settlements. Runciman writes as a narrative historian of diplomacy, belief, and war, drawing on Latin, Greek, and Arabic sources.
