This anthology collects first-person accounts of public events from the ancient world to the late twentieth century. Fox draws on letters, diaries, dispatches, and later reportage: soldiers, travelers, courtiers, and chance bystanders describe battles, discoveries, disasters, and ordinary shocks as they happened. The pieces are arranged to move forward in time rather than by nation, so Egyptian, classical, medieval, imperial, and modern witnesses stand in sequence. Headnotes place each voice. The work is a documentary reader, not a single-author history and not a memoir of Fox's own reporting.
