First collected from 1899 onward, these comic stories follow Major Sinclair Yeates, a former army officer appointed Resident Magistrate in a remote Irish district. He hunts, judges petty cases, and is drawn into the schemes of the local gentry, especially the reckless Flurry Knox, and into the customs of tenants, servants, and horse-dealers. Plots turn on hunts, house parties, disputed animals, and the gap between official procedure and how the country actually works. The book is a sequence of episodes rather than a novel: a newcomer learning that two and two need not make four in that jurisdiction.
