Every Man for Himself

By Beryl Bainbridge · 2016

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This novel is set on the Titanic during the days before and during the sinking in April 1912. The narrator, a young man connected to the Morgan financial world, moves among first-class passengers: idle rich, ambitious women, and men who treat the ship as a floating club. Shipboard flirtation, money, and social performance occupy the early chapters; then the collision reorders every alliance. Bainbridge keeps the known outline of the disaster while inventing private histories that intersect in dining rooms, corridors, and on deck. The book is a social comedy that becomes a study of panic and self-interest at sea.
