Everest
From Reconnaissance to Summit, 1921 to 1953
By Various Contributors · 2021
Back to CatalogueThis two-part collection documents the principal British expeditions to Mount Everest from the 1921 reconnaissance through the 1953 ascent. One volume is an eyewitness history: letters, dispatches, memoirs, and official reports from the climbs of 1921, 1922, 1924, 1933, and 1953, with linking commentary. The other is a photographic record of glaciers, camps, and the people on the mountain. The texts follow route-finding from Tibet and later Nepal, the deaths of Mallory and Irvine, later failures, and the final success of Hillary and Tenzing. It is a documentary anthology of how those expeditions were seen by those who went.
