This single-volume history treats the whole of Europe from prehistory to the late twentieth century, giving Eastern and Central lands as much space as the Atlantic states. Narrative chapters run from the ice age and classical antiquity through Christendom, empire, and the world wars; between them short capsules take up topics such as slavery, heresy, or a city. Maps and a long appendix of data sit beside the text. Davies argues against a history that is only Western Europe plus a margin. The book is a general history, not a textbook of one period and not a memoir.
