First published in 1833, this novel is set in the provincial town of Saumur, where the miser Felix Grandet rules his household by fear and by the worship of gold. His daughter Eugenie lives a narrow indoor life with her mother and the servant Nanon until her Parisian cousin Charles arrives, ruined by his father's bankruptcy and suicide. Grandet exploits the crisis; Eugenie's feeling for Charles becomes the measure of what the house will allow. The book is a study of avarice, inheritance, and a young woman whose one attachment collides with a fortune built on wine, speculation, and silence.
