Published in 1932, this travel book records Lawrence's visits to Etruscan tomb sites in west-central Italy, including Cerveteri, Tarquinia, Vulci, and Volterra. He describes painted chambers, sarcophagi, and the countryside around the dead cities, and he contrasts what he takes to be an Etruscan sense of the body and the afterlife with Roman conquest and with modern tourism. The chapters mix itinerary, archaeology as he found it on the ground, and speculative history. It is an essayistic journey rather than an excavation report: a sequence of site visits used to argue for a lost pre-Roman way of feeling.
