By Madame de la Tour du Pin · 1979

Synopsis

This memoir by Henriette-Lucy Dillon, Marquise de La Tour du Pin, records her life from the last years of the court of Louis XVI through the French Revolution and beyond. She describes Versailles, the fall of the monarchy, the danger to her family during the Terror, and their flight. A long middle section covers exile in America, where she and her husband farm near Albany. Later pages follow their return to France under the Consulate and Empire, further service, and later displacements. Written as a journal addressed to her son, it is a first-person account of an aristocrat surviving the collapse of the old regime.
