First published in 1938, this novel follows Josef Vadassy, a stateless teacher of languages, on holiday at a hotel on the French Riviera. When he collects photographs from a chemist, the film shows military installations; the police hold his passport and send him back to identify the spy among the guests. The hotel becomes a closed set of English, French, and Central European visitors, each with a possible motive. Vadassy, clumsy and frightened, must watch and report or face expulsion. The book is a pre-war spy thriller of ordinary people under suspicion, not a tale of professional agents.
