This selection of Hemingway's short fiction, written mainly in the 1920s and 1930s, follows soldiers, hunters, boxers, journalists, and married couples in Europe, Africa, and the United States. Typical situations include the aftermath of war, failed or brittle love, fishing and safari, and the testing of nerve in public and private. The prose is spare; much is left in dialogue and in what characters refuse to say. The volume is a cross-section of stories rather than a novel, including such pieces as The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. There is no single plot binding the book together.
