First published in 1904, this history covers England from the accession of James I in 1603 to the death of Queen Anne in 1714. Trevelyan follows the conflict between crown and parliament through the Personal Rule, the Civil Wars, the Commonwealth and Protectorate, the Restoration, the Exclusion Crisis, and the Revolution of 1688. He treats religion, the rise of party, and the social world of gentry and towns as well as high politics. The later chapters cover William III's wars and the union with Scotland. The book is a narrative political and social history of the Stuart century, not a collection of biographies.
