Published in 1933, this comic novel follows Donald Cameron, a young Scot invalided from the war and left nearly penniless, who is hired to write a book about the English. He moves through newspaper offices, country houses, a village cricket match, a by-election, and London clubs, meeting journalists, sportsmen, politicians, and hostesses who take their own customs as the measure of the world. The plot is a string of encounters rather than a single intrigue: Cameron observes class, sport, and public life while remaining an outsider. The book is a satire of interwar English types, written as the report he was commissioned to produce.
