First published in 1965 as a volume of the Oxford History of England, this political history runs from the outbreak of the First World War to the end of the Second. Taylor follows wartime government, the peace, the collapse of the Lloyd George coalition, the General Strike, the slump, the National Government, appeasement, and the Churchill coalition, with attention to parties, Parliament, and public opinion. Social and economic change appear as they press on high politics. The book is a continuous narrative of two wars and the uneasy peace between them, written as a study of how Britain was governed under strain.
