Published in 1967, this novel is narrated by Michael Rogers, a young working-class wanderer who becomes obsessed with a plot of land called Gypsy's Acre and the modern house he wants to build there. He meets Ellie, a sheltered heiress, and their marriage seems to make the house possible, despite a local woman's warnings of a curse and the unease of friends and relations. An architect, a companion, and the village around the site all enter the household. The book is a crime story told from inside a marriage and a building project, not a detective puzzle led by a famous sleuth.
