This three-volume historical set treats the Maya, the Aztecs, and the Incas as separate civilisations from their formative periods to the Spanish conquests of the sixteenth century. Hammond's Maya volume emphasises archaeology: cities, writing, agriculture, and the collapse of Classic-period centres in the lowlands. Davies's Aztec and Inca volumes follow dynastic expansion, tribute, religion, and the political structures encountered by Cortes and Pizarro. Across the set the subjects are state power, ritual, and the archaeological and written evidence for societies that left no European-style archives of their own. It is narrative history and synthesis, not a primary-source anthology.
