First published in 1815, this novel is set in the Surrey village of Highbury and follows Emma Woodhouse, a clever, comfortably rich young woman who has little to occupy her but arranging other people's attachments. She takes up Harriet Smith, discourages a suitable farmer, and misreads the intentions of Frank Churchill, Jane Fairfax, and her own heart. Mr Knightley, the neighbouring squire who has known her since childhood, is the one person who contradicts her. The comedy is social and moral: a closed circle of visits, dinners, and riddles in which matchmaking goes wrong and self-knowledge comes late.
