Egypt Revealed
Artist-Travellers in an Antique Land
By T.G.H. James · 1997
Back to CatalogueThis history of how ancient Egypt was recorded concentrates on British travellers, artists, and archaeologists from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth and into the twentieth. James follows surveyors and copyists who drew temples, tombs, and inscriptions, often under difficult conditions, and the institutions and expeditions that organised that work. The emphasis is on documentation rather than a complete pharaonic chronicle: who went, what they copied, and how a picture of the monuments was assembled in Britain. The book is an illustrated account of Egyptology as fieldwork and draftsmanship, not a narrative of the pharaohs themselves.
