This history, drawn from Halevy's account of the English people around 1895 to 1914, examines the political and social order of the years before the First World War. It follows the Conservative and Liberal parties, the rise of organised labour, the Irish question, the House of Lords crisis, and the imperial and naval rivalries of the period. Alongside high politics the book treats churches, education, the press, and the structure of classes. It is an analytical narrative of a prosperous, divided society moving toward a European war it does not yet understand as total. First issued in the early 1930s, it is a study of institutions more than of personalities.
