This selection of Edward Thomas's poems, written in the two years before his death in 1917, stays close to English lanes, woods, farms, weather, and the names of plants and villages. Speakers walk, pause at inns and junctions, and notice birds, labourers, and the approach of war without turning the poems into battle pieces. Recurring notes are memory, solitude, and a hesitant patriotism rooted in landscape. There is no continuous plot: the book is a sequence of short lyrics in which looking at the countryside becomes a way of thinking about time, work, and departure. The voice is quiet, observational, and often unfinished in feeling.
