Edward Gibbon's Atlas of the World
By Andrew Heritage, P.J.M. Geelan · 1991
Back to CatalogueThis historical atlas is a companion to Gibbon's Decline and Fall, pairing eighteenth-century maps of the kind Gibbon used with modern maps and a gazetteer of the places named in his history. An introduction and commentary set out how late-Enlightenment cartography pictured the Roman world, the Near East, and the routes of armies and migrations. The volume is geographical apparatus rather than narrative history: a visual and indexed guide to the physical stage of Gibbon's account, from the Mediterranean to the farther frontiers he described. Readers use it to locate campaigns, cities, and peoples as they move through the text.
