East of the Sun & West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North

Old Tales from the North Norwegian Folk Tales

By Peter Asbjørnsen, Jørgen Moe · 2000

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This collection of Norwegian folk tales, gathered in the nineteenth century, includes the title story of a white bear who carries a poor girl to a distant castle, a forbidden glimpse that breaks a spell, and her quest east of the sun and west of the moon to recover him. Companion tales feature trolls, princesses, youngest sons, talking animals, and farmsteads in winter country. The pieces are oral wonder-tales written down, not a novel: a sequence of quests, bargains, and transformations from the rural North, told in the plain narrative manner of collected folklore rather than as a single authored plot.
