First published in 1935, this narrative history traces Europe from early settlement and the Greek city-states through Rome, the Germanic invasions, medieval Christendom, and the rise of territorial monarchies, and closes in the 1930s. Fisher treats Hellenic culture and its Roman transmission as the core of a civilisation later altered by Christianity, Islam, and the Frankish and imperial orders. Later books follow Renaissance and Reformation conflicts, the Atlantic empires, the French Revolution, the nineteenth-century balance of power, and the alignments that produced the First World War. The focus is political and cultural, with England, France, and Germany taking most of the later space.
