This history of England after the Norman Conquest, originally titled England and its Rulers, follows the kings and magnates from 1066 through the thirteenth century: the imposition of Norman lordship, the Angevin empire, civil war, and the growth of royal administration under Henry II and his successors. Clanchy treats foreign rulers and the slow making of a political community, alongside law, charters, and the church. A companion section, drawn from From Memory to Written Record, examines how writing began to replace memory in government and property. The book is a political and documentary survey of the Anglo-Norman and early Plantagenet realm.
