This selection draws poems from Thomas's published volumes of the 1930s and 1940s, from 18 Poems through Deaths and Entrances and In Country Sleep. The pieces are lyric rather than narrative: dense, spoken verse about birth, sex, weather, the Welsh coast and countryside, childhood memory, and death. Recurring scenes include farms, towns, the sea, and the sickroom. Well-known poems sit beside earlier, more compacted work. The book is a cross-section of one poet's voice, not a continuous argument, and is meant to be heard as much as read silently. There is no single story, only a sequence of lyrics.
