Twelve years after Paul Atreides seized the imperial throne, this sequel finds him ruling a universe convulsed by a Fremen religious war fought in his name. On Arrakis he is emperor, prophet, and prisoner of the future he can see. A conspiracy involving the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, Tleilaxu face-dancers, and his own court seeks to break his hold, using a Tleilaxu-made figure from his past and the politics of the imperial succession. Paul's sister Alia, his concubine Chani, and his official consort Princess Irulan are pulled into that intrigue. The novel is a political and psychological study of power after victory, not a desert adventure of the first book's kind.
