Dubliners
The Corrected Text with an Explanatory Note
By James Joyce · 2003
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1914, this volume of fifteen short stories follows middle-class Catholic Dubliners through childhood, youth, maturity, and public life. A boy watches a priest's death and a bazaar; young clerks and students stall in jobs and courtships; married couples and political canvassers expose disappointment and paralysis. Recurring settings are streets, pubs, boarding houses, and drawing-rooms. The stories are realist and often end on a moment of recognition rather than a plotted climax. The last, The Dead, gathers a winter party and a marriage into a longer meditation on the living and the remembered.
