First published in 1898, this companion to The Golden Age is a set of linked childhood sketches narrated by one of a group of children living in an English country house. Adults appear as Olympians who misunderstand play, punishment, and make-believe. Episodes include a visit to a circus, a toy boat, a Christmas, and the tale of a boy who meets a dragon that would rather write verse than fight. The tone mixes comedy with the children's sense of justice and loss. The book is a suite of autobiographical fictions of childhood, not a single plotted novel and not a beast fable only.
