A History of England in the 18th Century
By Thomas Babington MacAulay · 1980
Back to CatalogueThis is Macaulay's History of England from the Accession of James the Second, issued from 1848, not a survey of the eighteenth century as the present title suggests. After a long prelude on earlier English development, the narrative concentrates on 1685 to 1702: James II's attempt to restore Catholic and royal power, the invasions of Monmouth and of William of Orange, the settlement that made William and Mary joint monarchs, and the wars and parliamentary struggles of William's reign in England, Ireland, and Scotland. The unfinished close reaches the opening of Anne's reign. The argument is Whig: that this revolution secured Protestant succession and a working balance between Crown and Parliament.
